D&B provided engineering services for the design and construction of a new 1.0 MG Elevated Water Storage Tank for the Incorporated Village of Sands Point. The Village owned and operated an existing 100,000 gallon elevated water storage tank in the southern portion of their distribution system. Over time, the existing tank capacity became insufficient due to development in the Village.
D&B developed a computer model of the Village’s distribution system in order to size and locate the proposed tank. Using the computer model, it was determined that a one million gallon elevated tank should be constructed in the vicinity of the existing 100,000 gallon tank. The existing tank was to be demolished upon completion of the construction of the new tank. Through the model, it was determined that the existing water mains in the area of the tank were not adequately sized. A loop consisting of 8 inch and 12 inch water mains was determined to be the best method to convey the water from the tank to the points of use throughout the Village.
Because the proposed tank was to be constructed in the Nassau County Nature Preserve, D&B prepared an Environmental Assessment (EAS). The EAS included simulations of the visual impact of various proposed locations throughout the nature preserve.
In addition to the contract documents for the elevated water storage tank, D&B also prepared plans and specifications for construction of the water mains, tank level telemetering equipment and demolition of the existing tank.
Project challenges included the coordination and sequencing of several contracts in order to ensure that the necessary support infrastructure was in place upon completion of the tank construction.
D&B prepared the preliminary design report, contract drawings and contract specifications for this project. D&B provided assistance during the bidding phases. Construction phase services included site inspection as well as project administration. D&B assisted the District in obtaining approvals from the Nassau County Department of Health (NCDH).
