D&B provided engineering services for the design and construction of a new 600 gpm Iron and Manganese Removal system at Well 6 for the Incorporated Village of Sands Point. The existing well had been out of service for several years due to elevated levels of iron and manganese. Due to increasing demands in the system and contamination at another well site, the Village decided to provide treatment at Well 6 and return it to service. In order to return the well to service in the shortest possible time, the project was fast-tracked by bidding separate contracts for the various phases of the construction.
In the preliminary design phase, D&B evaluated three different proprietary treatment systems and recommended a greensand filtration system to the Village. The facility included a three-vessel greensand filtration system. Two vessels can treat the full design flow while the third is in the backwash and regeneration cycle.
The existing pumping equipment and below grade well vault were in poor condition and were therefore completely demolished and all new facilities constructed. The new building was designed to accommodate an additional greensand filtration system in the future. In addition, a two bay garage was provided for the Village Department of Public Works.
D&B evaluated alternatives for the disposal of the backwash wastewater. Ultimately, the best disposal scenario included the construction of two drying beds.
Project challenges included the coordination and sequencing of several contracts in order to expedite the construction process.
D&B prepared the preliminary design report, contract drawings and contract specifications for this project. D&B provided assistance during the bidding phase. Construction phase services included site inspection as well as project administration. D&B assisted the District in obtaining approvals from the Nassau County Department of Health (NCDH).
