Project Description

Aerial view of Indian IslandD&B was selected by Suffolk County to develop design concepts to mitigate erosion of the beach and bluff at Indian Island County Park on Indian Island.

The purpose of the project is to protect the east facing shoreline, including the bluff and beach, from ongoing beach and bluff erosion caused by normal coastal storms and northeasters.

The scope of this proposal is to develop a project that moves the zone of breaking waves away from the beach and bluff so as to reduce or eliminate erosion of the beach and bluff shoreline using Living Shorelines. Alternatives must also meet the required environmental regulatory requirements of the US Army Corps of Engineers, Peconic Estuary, New York State Coastal Management Program, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Town of Riverhead (if needed) as well as the Suffolk County Council on Environmental Quality and the State Environmental Quality Review Act.
