Earth Day

D&B’s Senior Vice President, Rich Walka and Senior Associate, Ellen DeOrsay were asked by Friend’s Academy in Locust Valley, NY to help wrap up the Academy’s “Earth Week” program. To that end, Rich and Ellen prepared a presentation for the 3rd to 5th grade students entitled, “Earth Day: Past, Present and Future.” The presentation traced the origins of the environmental movement beginning in the 1960’s with the publication of Rachel Carson’s “The Silent Spring” through the formation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the 1970’s and the enactment of each piece of major environmental legislation from the 1970’s to the present. Before and after photographs of a number of nationally renowned hazardous waste sites in the tri-state area were presented and discussed to demonstrate the progress and accomplishments achieved in remediating these sites over the last 3 decades. The presentation concluded by providing some “food for thought” for the students with respect to possible environmental careers. Overall, a fitting conclusion to the week-long celebration of Earth Day at Friends Academy!
