As part of its monthly membership meeting, Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners’ Association (NSWCA) hosted D&B’s Executive Vice President Bill Merklin and Andrew Marrandino, Engineer II for a special presentation. Titled, “Three’s a Crowd: Balancing Between AOP, GAC and Nitrate Treatment,” the presentation focused on a highly unique project D&B is working on with Port Washington Water District.
Merklin and Marrandino explained how D&B’s sophisticated engineering solutions addressed a number of complexities many water suppliers face, such as Port Washington. Known as the Stonytown Well 10 Facility, this advanced system of engineering and construction is a feat in itself, and includes three complex treatment processes:
- Ion Exchange for nitrate treatment
- Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) for 1,4-dioxane treatment
- Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) for treatment of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
This is all being conducted on an extremely small parcel of land within a 6,300-square-foot structure. Architectural design characteristics were approved for the treatment system to aesthetically blend into the surrounding park and neighborhood. When it’s all said and done, and the well is put back online in Spring 2025, this facility will be one of the most advanced water treatment systems in the nation! Working together with the Port Washington Water District, all consumers can be rest assured that the water delivered to their home or business meets or exceeds all local, state and federal standards.
