Friends Academy is a coeducational, independent, college-preparatory school founded in 1876 for students ages three through twelfth grade. The Quaker school is firmly committed to the testimonies of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, service, and stewardship.
The 65-acre campus is located in Locust Valley, NY and D&B has supported the organization in several important ways for a number of years.
Recently, D&B’s Senior Vice President Richard Walka and Vice Presidents Matt DeVinney and Frank DeVita participated in the Academy’s 6th Grade math program wherein the student teams are required to prepare a detailed proposal and presentation in support of a “Basement Redesign,” a long-running Friends Academy tradition in sixth-grade.
The teaching component included D&B providing specific advice and examples of technical proposal preparation and persuasive writing techniques, along with a review and critique of the students’ work products by outside professionals and entrepreneurs with expertise in the fields of interior design, engineering and architecture who provide feedback and guidance for the students.
“It was a pleasure to work with so many bright young minds,” Mr. Walka stated. “The Friends Academy program is an important real world learning experience for the kids, and a great opportunity for Matt, Frank and I to interact and help shape a 21st century education for them.”
