Firebird Center for Arts and Athletics Uniondale, NY
Kellenberg Memorial High School is a private Catholic school in Uniondale, NY with a student body of over 2,500. D&B together with MVK Architecture, P.C. designed a much-needed new building for athletics and performing arts classes and activities. Due to the tight schedule, the project was done as a fast-track project with aspects completed under a design-build basis with the design team working together with the construction manager and other client specialty consultants.
The new 2-story, 60,000 sq. ft. building is situated adjacent to the existing football field, track and field, the main school building, the Catholic Radio Network building, and surrounded by parking lots. The building is a pre-engineered steel structure with concrete foundation, concrete floor slab, and 2nd floor concrete slab on deck. It is fully handicapped accessible with an elevator and 4 accessible stairs.
Sport activity spaces include a gymnasium with (2) that can be converted to volleyball courts and baseball batting cages. The gymnasium can be divided into (2) gym spaces with a 25 ft. tall motorized movable partition. Other sporting venues include an 8-lane bowling alley complete with competition viewing area and (2) golf simulator cages. Performing arts spaces include studios and rooms for orchestra, dance, band, practice booths, and a large multi-purpose room. On the 2nd floor is an outdoor activity balcony overlooking the baseball field.
