Mount Sinai Medical Center Multimedia Environmental Compliance Audits
Mount Sinai Health System combines the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and seven hospital campuses throughout the New York metropolitan area. With nearly 3,500 beds, the system has provided high-quality healthcare to patients in the area since the early 1800s.
After entering into a Facility Audit Agreement with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)-Region 2, D&B was retained to conduct a comprehensive multimedia environmental compliance audit, develop a corrective action plan and strategy to address noncompliance, and assist in the development of an Environmental Management System that maintains compliance and can easily be modified to meet changing regulatory requirements. The backbone of the compliance program has been the development of a comprehensive training program that addresses ongoing compliance. In addition, standard operating procedures have been developed, which target the specific areas of environmental compliance that form the basis for the training programs.
The health system has also embarked on a major capital reconstruction program for its Basic Sciences Building. To support this effort, D&B conducted a comprehensive hazardous materials assessment of buildings that were scheduled for demolition to make room for the new construction. D&B was also charged with providing oversight of pre-demolition activities, including the removal of hazardous materials and hazardous waste, and the clean out and decontamination of research laboratories, clinical laboratories and mechanical spaces.
