Tom Fox, D&B Senior Associate, recently provided a PowerPoint presentation to approximately 30 members of American Water Works Association (AWWA). The presentation focused on topics in groundwater contaminant hydrogeology that regularly appear in the news including a discussion of contaminants referred to as Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS and 1,4 Dioxane. Mr. Fox discussed the basic chemistry of the contaminants, how they have entered the environment, their potential health effects and how they may migrate through groundwater and impact drinking water supplies. He spoke about recent additions to USEPA and New York State regulations designed to reduce the public’s exposure to the compounds. He reviewed currently available technologies used to treat groundwater impacted by these compounds. The presentation was well received and a lively question and answer period ensued. Mr. Fox has presented periodically over the last 15 years to AWWA as part of their continuing education program.
