Rehabilitation of Water, Wastewater and Stormwater Utility Systems at Fort Wadsworth Gateway National Recreation Area, New York
Fort Wadsworth is a former United States military installation located on the eastern shore of Staten Island, New York, at the Narrows of New York Harbor and is one of the oldest military installations in the nation. The site contains fortifications that were built for the protection of New York for more than two centuries. The site is operated by the National Park Service as part of the Staten Island Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area and remains active housing U.S. Army Reserve and Coast Guard facilities, as well as for use by the public. The purpose of the project is to renew the water, wastewater and stormwater utility systems, including: the replacement 31,600-linear feet of water mains and service connections; the replacement / rehabilitation of 11,200-linear feet of sewer mains, service connections and manholes; and the replacement / rehabilitation of 26,100-linear feet of storm drains, manholes and catch basins. The project is being performed using the design-build construction project delivery method, with D&B serving as the Design Engineer and JR Cruz Construction Corporation serving as the Design-Build Contractor.
As the Design Engineer on the Design-Build Team, D&B is providing professional engineering services to the Design- Build Contractor throughout the design and construction phases. During the design phase, D&B’s responsibilities include field investigations, condition assessments, preparation of design calculations, hydraulic modeling, development of contract drawings and specifications, and procurement of permits and regulatory agency approvals. D&B will also provide design services during construction, which will include coordination with the Design-Build Contractor and Project Owner, review of construction submittals, preparation of change order documents, participation in progress meetings, and preparation of as-built drawings.
